Resource Recovery

Recycle Central's business is built around resource recovery. By recovering viable materials from waste, we achieve significant environmental benefits while reducing disposal costs, which we pass on to our customers through competitive waste collection rates.

What's resource recovery and why do we do it?

Everyone knows what recycling is, but before you can recycle a material, you must first separate the material from other materials. This is what we do at Recycle Central, which then enables us to send off quality-controlled recyclables to our partners in the manufacturing and recycling industries.

The benefits of resource recovery include:

Diversion of waste from landfills - with the benefits of reducing the emission of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, to the atmosphere

Reducing the use of non-renewable raw materials - reduces the impacts of mining while conserving mineral resources for future generations.

Reduced carbon dioxide emissions on climate change.

Reduction of the cost of waste disposal - with costs passed onto consumers.

How do we recover materials?

The efficient recovery of resources from waste material is a complex process involving careful planning, large-scale technology, and highly trained personnel. Core elements of our overall process include:

On-site resource recovery and recycling are carried out by our project teams when a building or infrastructure element is deconstructed before new construction begins. This often involves breaking and crushing concrete or cutting up structural steel.

Pre-sorting of waste is the first stage of resource recovery conducted at one of our transfer stations or at our resource recovery facility after a client's waste has been collected. Pre-sorting utilises specialised labour and mobile equipment to separate easily removed components before mechanised waste processing.

Mechanised processing is carried out after the pre-sort stage. This involves using shredders, magnets, trommels and density separation processes to recover the maximum possible proportion of recyclable materials from mixed waste.

Quality Control is the final stage of resource recovery and is vital to ensure that all materials provided to our recycling partners are of the same, consistent quality every time.

What happens to recovered materials?

Materials recovered from the mixed waste at our facilities are transported to our long-term recycling partners, leaders in the Australian recycling and manufacturing sectors.

Ferrous metals are smelted back into virgin metals for the production of goods.

Non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, stainless steel, copper, brass, and lead are smelted back into pure metals for manufacturing.

Wood is recycled to manufacture particle boards for construction

Concrete and brick are recycled onsite to produce recovered aggregates.

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) and PVC are processed domestically to produce construction materials.

Plasterboard is recycled to produce new plasterboard and agricultural products.
