Social Contributions

Throughout its nine years, Recycle Central has strived to contribute to its host communities and the broader region through social initiatives and business policies. We have achieved this through sporting sponsorships, study scholarships, donations to medical research, and employment opportunities for disadvantaged people in the community.

Medical Research

Recycle Central is passionate about supporting charities that contribute significantly to improved outcomes for patients suffering from some of our most debilitating health conditions. Key areas that we have been actively supporting include cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Some of our 2023 and 2024 contributions are outlined  below.

The Mark Hughes Foundation

The Mark Hughes Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to raising funds and awareness for brain cancer research. Through various fundraising initiatives, community events, and partnerships, the foundation strives to make a meaningful difference in the fight against brain cancer.

The Hunter Medical Research Institute

The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) is Australia's leading medical research facility, focused on translating scientific discoveries into practical health improvement outcomes. Recycle Central was privileged to be able to support the 2024 Jack Murphy Memorial Society fundraising dinner for research into Sudden Cardiac Death.

The Shake it Up Foundation of Australia

The Shake It Up Foundation is a non-profit organisation in Australia dedicated to funding research into Parkinson's disease.  Recycle Central was honoured to be able to support the Shake it Up Foundation in April 2024 with a donation to help support their extremely valuable work.

Sponsorship of Sporting Clubs

Recycle Central has a long history of sponsoring community sporting clubs, including:

Lake Macquarie City FC
We have been a naming rights sponsor since the 2022 season. The Roosters have an exceptional youth football development program season. We have enjoyed the privilege of supporting one of the oldest and most successful football clubs in the region.

The Abermain-Weston Hawkes Rugby League Club
Recycle Central is excited to sponsor this historic rugby league club, which was founded in 1910 and is based in the Hunter Valley Coalfields region.

The Kurri Kurri Bulldogs Rugby League Club
The Bulldogs, founded in 1911, compete in the Newcastle Rugby League competition. Recycle Central is proud to sponsor this historic and multiple premiership-winning local club, and we wish them great success in the 2024 season.

Educational Initiatives

Recycle Central is passionate about the long-term development of our host communities. We believe there is no better way to invest in our community's future than to help facilitate access to educational opportunities for young people.

Our facility is located within the Cessnock City Council Local Government area. The Mayor's office has a 23-year history of providing scholarships to the most worthy applicants living in the LGA and has helped many young people achieve their career aspirations.

Recycle Central has supported this program since 2022 and feels privileged to be able to provide funding to Kelly Williams Caslick, who is studying early childhood teaching at the University of Newcastle. We wish Kelly all the best in her studies and her future career.

Creating Employment Opportunities

Recycle Central strongly believes in the benefits of diversity in our workforce. We believe that candidates' personal attributes and life experiences go well beyond those typically assessed by employers. We strive to look for capabilities in all potential candidates and are very proud to have helped many employees significantly improve their vocational and financial circumstances over the years.

Our facility is in Kurri Kurri, which has experienced high unemployment rates since the closure of the aluminium smelter and surrounding collieries. We focus on employing local people, benefiting employees, their families, and the local economy.

We Buy Locally

We believe in buying locally to be "good neighbours" and stimulate the local economy. We always seek out local suppliers of goods and services, and only if we can't find what we require locally or regionally do we procure from outside the region.

To name just a few of the goods and services that we procure locally:

  1. Hardware items from our local Mitre 10 store in Kurri Kurri
  2. Food from local catering businesses
  3. Diesel from a local fuel distributor
  4. Surveying services
  5. Architectural design and structural engineering services
  6. Metal fabrication services
  7. Local trade services such as electricians and plumbers

In addition to our direct procurement as a business, our more than 70 staff members mostly live in and around Kurri Kurri and collectively contribute greatly to the local takeaway food sector during working hours and, more broadly, to the many small retailers that operate in the town centre.
