Understanding Permits for Skip Bin Placement

At our core, we pride ourselves on simplifying the skip bin arrangement process for residents in the Hunter and Central Coast regions. From quick quotes to easy bookings, we prioritise convenience in every step of the rubbish disposal process. We understand however that skip bin placement can be a confusing process. Questions like "Do I need a permit?" or "How do I get a permit?" are common concerns, but we’ve got your back and we're here to provide you with the answers you need.

Your need for a permit often depends on whether your skip bin is going to be the life of the party on public or private land. Private property most often gets a free pass (aka no permit), but like any good dance, there are exceptions. Some councils want to be the judges and might request a permit, even for your own front yard shindig.

Understanding these various compliance requirements can be confusing, but we're committed to making this step easier for you. Confused about permits? No worries! We've got the playbook to make it crystal clear.

Private land

As a general rule of thumb, a majority of skips can be placed on your own private property without a permit. We always advise however, that you double check your council's requirements, and are well-versed on your property boundary lines.

You may not realise, but placing your skip bin on the nature strip, parts of the road, or even in your own driveway, may still require council permission depending on your location.

Public land

A majority of local councils will require a permit for placement on public land. At Central Waste Skips, we keep things transparent. If a permit is needed, it's your personal responsibility, but hey, we're here to help guide you. We don't sneak in any permit fees in your booking, giving you the freedom to handle it directly with your council. With that being said, some of our suppliers may provide this for you and if so, will advise you prior to your delivery.

Council requirements for a permit

Before arranging your skip bin, it's important to note that council regulations vary, and understanding them is key to a smooth process. Each governing council, such as Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and the Central Coast, has its own set of rules and regulations, particularly regarding skip bin placement on both private and public land.

Newcastle

In Newcastle, The City Council suggests keeping skip bins on your own turf (private) hassle-free—no permit needed, as long as you stick to waste rules. If public placement is necessary, contacting the council is key in determining whether a permit is needed. Placing skip bins on public property, like nature strips or footpaths, may not always require a permit, granted there's enough ample space for pedestrians to pass safely. As long as your neighbours can stroll on by, you won’t have to worry about being ‘that’ guy.

Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie residents, similarly, only need a permit for public land placement. Importantly however, residents cannot directly apply for permits themselves; instead, applications must be arranged through a skip bin supplier. This is where our team can provide valuable help, ensuring a compliant and hassle-free process for our customers.

Central Coast

On the Central Coast, likewise to Newcastle, approval and a permit is required for public skip bin placement. The council considers factors such as location, size, and visibility in the application process. We emphasise the importance of assessing these aspects beforehand, especially in high-traffic areas, that may in turn not be permitted.

If ever uncertain about meeting these requirements, we strongly recommend consulting your local authorities to ensure you are complying with the governing regulations for your skip bin placement. Your peace of mind is important to us… and it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
